He was murdered!
Not many know this but... Okay, no one knows this, but back to the point....
The former Marquis was murdered.... poisoned.
How, you ask? Quite simply, actually. Or maybe not so.
You see, an assassin was hired some years before the Marquis died to kill the Marquis. He was paid well and had a special request to do the job extremely well.
Now, when the Marquis began to gain a slur of tongue and slow of movements, a doctor was employed to give him the medicine he required. Now, the doctor did take care of him and give him medicine for approximately six months.
But the six months wasn't when the Marquis died. It was when the doctor died. The assassin killed the doctor and replaced him (or her) with a disguised friend of his. Now, this 'doctor' gave the Marquis the medicine. Or, rather, the 'doctor' gave the Marquis a poison that looked, smelled, and almost exactly tasted like the medicine that he had been given before.
Slowly his health declined and so the 'doctor' ordered more 'medicine' on him. This was so that he, nor anyone else could object and if anyone knew then they would not be believed and if the Marquis discovered anything he would be too sick to say or they could claim that he was in delierium(sp?).
And, so, one day, after some years of taking the poison, he died.
But, who hired this assassin and paid him quite well? A political rival? An enemy from another kingdom? (or one who was the lover of the former Marquis' wife before the former Marquis took her away from him)
Who is the assassin? A citizen? Or one with political power?

Mmm. It's more of history than a plot. If the assassin were to make attacks on the current Marquis, that might fit into a plot better-- but you'd need someone to fill into that role.

True... but I think I mentioned this in here, but I shall repeat it:
The assassin was hired. Which means that someone wanted the Marquis dead because the former Marquis has the experience, not the young one. If anything, they would allow Lucien to retain his life so they could corrupt his inexperienced mind.
What is more... We still haven't answered who would have hired an assassin the first place. But, I would be willing to bet that a political figure or another king from another land came.
It could also explain why the magic has been reappearing. Magic could only come to those who require it as a need or when they need it.
Which could suggest that the magic wasn't really lost at all. It was just dorment because it knew that it would have to come back sometime, just not now.

I undestood that the assassin was hired, but you still need to fill the role of benefactor-- whether it is known, or they will make themselves known to Lucien as to what they did for him.
Secondly, you'd need a reason since it was stated {I believe} that the former Marquise was a good ruler and loved by his people.
Lastly, the magic went away due to a /curse/ so that wouldn't work. It would throw off my history.
Perhaps it just needed the right rulers to unlock the curse. And parhaps, just perhaps , the courts may have something to do with it in the future.
